Fuqua Film Program Screens Its First Group of Student Films

Posted in Stuff We Like by Jessica on June 7, 2010

On June 4th, I attended a special screening of the Fuqua Film Program’s introductory group of student films. The screening was held at the Tribeca Screening Room where friends and family of the filmmakers attended and showed their support.

The Fuqua Film Program is based in Brownsville, Brooklyn. Founded by Antoine Fuqua, director of “Training Day,” the program was created in response to the overwhelming support received by Fuqua and his team while shooting his latest film, “Brooklyn’s Finest” in the neighborhood. Matt Coleman, the director of the program, was present at the screening. Matt, along with the student filmmakers, provided the audience with a short history of the program and an introduction to each featured film.

We were all very impressed by the level of film making exhibited in the films. Here is a short synopsis of each film shown at the screening:

Film: “Who I Am”
Director: Marcus Underwood
Synopsis: A policeman tries to talk a young gang member out of the gang life and is met with resistance. After a fatal altercation, the young man realizes that his mentor has influenced him more than he could have imagined.

Film: “Coming from the Bottom”
Director: Bryan Martin
Synopsis: After spending some time in prison, two best friends take separate paths – one continues on as a drug dealer while the other follows his dream of becoming a rapper.

Film: “The Interview”
Director: Lea-sym Feyjoo
Synopsis: When a man is given a second chance after losing his family and apartment, he undergoes a series of comic missteps in pursuit of getting his life back. This Charlie Chaplin/Buster Keaton influenced comedy was the crowd favorite by the end of the night.

The next step for the program is to hold a much larger screening/fundraiser where they hope to get more exposure and funding for the program. Congratulations to all of the filmmakers and to the Fuqua Film Program for a great first year!
