Rooster Tested: Which is the best mango sorbet? Haagen Dazs, Ciao Bella, or Sharon's Sorbet

Rooster Tested: Which is the best mango sorbet? Haagen Dazs, Ciao Bella, or Sharon's Sorbet

Since the conversation of summer 2010 has been the oppressive hot weather, I figured a sorbet taste test would really hit the spot. Sorbet is great because we get have a sweet treat that’s still (slightly) healthier than ice cream, so it’s somewhat guilt free! So which is the best? At first I was sure that raspberry sorbet would be the easiest to find consistently across different brands, but to my surprise and delight the easiest flavor to find was actually mango… so which is the best?

The brands we tasted were the familiar favorite Haagen Dazs, high-end and local Ciao Bella, and organic Sharon’s Sorbet.  I have to admit, I thought they would taste and look a lot more similar then they were, the differences were really considerable.  The colors of the sorbet ranged from pastel peach to a deep vibrant orange. At the end of the day, almost unanimously, the winner was Ciao Bella. We thought it’s flavor was pure and true to real mango flavor, while also being just sweet enough.  The Haagen Dazs didn’t taste enough like real mango for most of us and the organic version was kind of bland.

And the winner is.... Ciao Bella!

And the winner is.... Ciao Bella!

More surprising comments came after the reveal of the actual packaging.  No one liked the new Ciao Bella packaging.  What was once simple and sophisticated packaging has been muddled with actual photography.   For Roosters who are apt to buy a book because of the cover, we think they’ve taken a step back…but ultimately we are loyal to good product and in this arena, they reign supreme!
