A round of applause, please.

The finalists for the 2nd Annual Next Big Small Brand have been announced, by the New York Magazine’s Grub Street no less.

Deliberations went through the evening…the semi-finalists floored us with their entrepreneurialism and tasty morsels.  We wanted everyone to reap the rewards of the prize.  Unfortunately we had to narrow the bunch, but we are confident that we are going to see more than one of these incredible products on store shelves.

Words of wisdom

Rubbing elbows with other branding bigwigs, Fernando’s two cents are captured in this month’s Elle Magazine:

“People now have their personal brands and also work for companies.  Even at the lowest level, kids on their blogs think, Does this choice — this job, this person I’m dating reflect my brand?  The idea that you’ll work for a company and they’ll take care of you for life — that train has left the station.  You have to take care of yourself.”

When is the last time to looked at your Facebook page or Twitter feed as a future employer would?

Pick up the November 2010 issue of Elle and read what the other brand experts quip as well as the feature article about a woman’s education in self-branding.

Rooster’s design graces The Daily Heller

Rooster's cover for NYCHA's Green Guide

With tears in our eyes, we bid our partnership with desigNYC adieu.  It was a great experience and we’ve met some wonderful people along the way.  We are also pretty proud of the end result and hope NYCHA and NYC can boast significant energy savings in the years to come.

The grand finale is tomorrow evening at the Pratt Manhattan Gallery Space.  Each group will showcase their efforts over the last half year and discuss their experiences.  It’s supposed to be a packed house of more than 250 guests; can’t say we’re surprised.

But it’s not a sundae without the cherry on top and our cherry came this morning via The Daily Heller.  One of Print magazine’s blogs, The Daily Heller announced the closing ceremonies and featured our design as a project example.  A link to all the project videos is included in the article, or you can click here to see ours.

UPDATE: Other incredible DesigNYC mentions include PSFK and New York Magazine.

Rooster applauded at NYCHA Green Event

Margarita Lopez talks about Rooster designed Green Guide

Rooster got props from some powerful and amazing women in sustainability/environmental world this past Earth Day.

At an event hosted by NYCHA for their residents, the Rooster-designed green guide was unveiled as NYCHA announced their efforts in the Green Agenda.  Moderated by Margarita Lopez, NYCHA Board Member, the event had a roundtable of experts including Lauren Yarmuth of YRG Sustainability (and advisor to desigNYC) and Mary Barber of the Environmental Defense Fund.   During the introductions, Mary Barber held up the Green Guide and commented that she’s come across many guides in her travels and the guide we wrote and designed was the best and most clear she’s ever seen.

In a one-on-one interview earlier in the evening, Margarita Lopez is quoted saying that our designs captured the feeling in a way “that is so dynamic and so accurate, it made her feel like she was walking through the developments.”  She continued, “This Green Guide is going to be the single most important piece of everything we are going to do with the Green Agenda.”

Yup, we’re her secret weapon to help change people’s behavior….her words.

Future of Food Meet-Up

Fernando Music speaking at the Future of Food with Y+30

Y+30 is a meet-up group that was created to provide a forum for discussing how our actions and developments today will affect our future – specifically 30 years out.  Y+30 has looked at a whole range of topics and created quite a following.  When the very talented Mollie Chen asked me to participate in their food-themed event, I couldn’t have been more excited and immediately said yes.

The reason for this over the top enthusiasm? The other panelists that evening were: Executive Chef, Michael Anthony of Gramercy Tavern; founder of Anson Mills, Glenn Roberts; and co-founder of Food52, Amanda Hesser. That’s a pretty good group.  There were more than 250 people in the audience at the Tribeca outpost of the 92nd Street Y and they asked some great questions. The themes were deeply rooted in today’s food politics, which hopefully can be resolved before we get to the Y+30 version of tomorrow…

Heritage Radio Interview

Fernando Music at Heritage Radio

Fernando Music on Hot Grease at Heritage Radio

With numerous shows dedicated in one way or another to the topic of food, Heritage Radio is one of the best things happening in the NY/National food conversation. Started by Patrick Martins of Heritage Foods USA with help from Alice Waters (no shortage of street cred here), the station is housed in a shipping container at Roberta’s in Bushwick.  It’s a fun place and one can’t help but feel the energy of the movement. When Rooster was asked by Hot Grease’s Nicole Taylor to come down and talk about The Next Big Small Brand contest and the winner on air, I high tailed it over… Listen to the full segment here:
